On air as Geíza in “Justiça 2” (Globoplay), Belize Pombal will also return to “Renascer” (Globo). In the next chapters, the ghost of Quitéria, the mother of Maria Santa (Duda Santos), will appear to Inácia (Edvana Carvalho) and reveal two secrets that will cause a twist in the plot.
Amidst the good crop of works, Belize is celebrating the success and recognition from viewers. It wasn’t always like this. At 38 years old, 27 of them dedicated to acting, she has only now reached prominent roles in the audiovisual mainstream.
“My entry on TV happened at the time it had to be, at the moment when I was more mature. At the same time, we know of white people who, even without maturity, matured throughout the opportunities given to them”, ponders in an interview with F5in which he spoke about his first experience in a soap opera, his career in the artistic world and the importance of having more and more diversity in the casts.
“These are traces of my own trajectory as an individual that mix with cultural, historical and racial issues. In addition to my personalities, there is a collective structure that helps black people reach certain spaces later”, he assesses.
With a degree in dramatic arts from USP, Belize began studying theater at the age of 11. On her CV, she has worked as an actress, playwright, performer and musical composer. She has also acted in films and series such as “Sessão de Terapia”, “Vítimas do Dia”, was part of the theater company “Os Crespos” and created the children’s shows “Fulaninho e Menininha” and “Os Coloridos”.
For her, this scenario has been changing on open TV and streaming, but there is still a need to open more doors and diversify casts and teams. “It’s nowhere near what it should be in terms of equity,” she says.
OPPORTUNITY FOR WHOM?
While artists like Belize fight for more prominence, people who don’t necessarily want a career in the arts end up being promoted to great roles almost by chance. This is the case of influencers, ex-BBBs and models who receive important roles without, not always, being able to deliver what is expected.
“It’s distressing to know that there are professional colleagues who are not working, while people who don’t necessarily really want to dedicate themselves to this are occupying work spaces”, says Belize.
Despite her formal education in the arts, the actress believes in other paths to learning and becoming a professional. “We have incredible artists, with powerful and beautiful trajectories and who learned and developed through other dynamics than necessarily university”, she says.
“I still have a lot to learn, watch, read, discover and develop technically. I really believe in the importance of education, but our society has a limited view of what it means to be intelligent or well informed”, he ponders. Still, she believes that the artistic scene needs to be more careful and “realize that there are excellent professionals who need to work and have no space.”
For her, this scenario has been changing on open TV and streaming, but there is still a need to open more doors and diversify casts and teams. “It’s not even close to what it should be in terms of equity,” she says.
GEÍZA AND QUITÉRIA
In the second season of “Justiça”, Belize plays Geíza, a manicurist from Ceilândia, on the outskirts of the Federal District, who kills a man to defend her daughter, Sandra (Gi Fernandes). “Several aspects of Geíza’s history are repeated in the history of Brazilian women”, says the actress, who believes that the power of art is to bring critical exercise to viewers.
Quitéria from “Renascer” is a submissive woman who suffers at the hands of her abusive husband, Venâncio (Fábio Lago) and is unable to protect her own daughters. “I think it’s essential that people have space to make their own reflections,” she says.
