Do you think it is a common secret that most of us are currently on the verge of a possible burnout?

Specifically, in the last two years, in addition to the real pandemic, we are facing another, more “hidden” one. That of overtime. The one in which working from home has led to the culture of being constantly available and of course the concept of working hours has said goodbye to us for a long time.

Being constantly busy – and the culture of “fuss” in general – parades as a sign of honor and burnout is re-framed.

We work longer hours, we experience constant fatigue, and both our mental and physical health suffer. But what is it that makes people work so hard, even when they are aware of the negative effects?

The researchers called it “optimal busyness” – an exciting and enjoyable flow of time in which employees feel at their best and more productive than ever.

A study by the ESSEC Business School found that what might be called “optimal employment” made employees feel energetic, productive and in control of their time, giving them positive energy.

For many, less work did not really equate to less stress. Even when people felt that the balance between their professional and personal lives was delicate, they preferred busy periods to more relaxed ones. On the contrary, the experience of optimal employment led them to believe that they could control the demands of their job, and so they ended up working too hard.

Despite the seemingly positive psychological effects, the researchers warned that optimal employment is a vicious circle.

“While this type of work can lead to positive emotions and greater productivity in the short term, over time it can lead to overwork, reduced productivity and conflict between work and personal life. “While optimal employment is elusive, employees will continue to pursue it through their time,” the researchers wrote in Psychology Today.

It is a growing problem, as a recent study found that 69% of home-based workers in the UK experience symptoms of burnout.

But no matter how much – and if – you realize it, what can you do to ensure that you do not fall deeper into the trap of optimal employment and addiction to feeling constantly busy?

Make sure you get your license

If you are one of those people who have accumulated many days off work due to the pandemic and the inability to travel, you must remember that it is important to take time to rest regardless of the occasion.

Even if you stay home on your leave, it is a perfect opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after all.
