“The Church of Saint John in Kastri was immortalized in the film adaptation of the musical Mamma Mia, turning the impressive rock into an international attraction” writes a popular French website
The first place among the six most beautiful film locations in Greece that create unique travel experiences is held by Skopelos in the list announced by the French website generationvoyage.fr after a survey of the preferences of its readers.
According to the popular website trusted by millions of French tourists, “the church of Saint John in Kastri stands iconic on a rocky islet offering a fascinating panorama that “embraces” the Aegean. The setting was immortalized in the film adaptation of the musical Mamma Mia, transforming the impressive rock from a lookout for pirate attacks that it served centuries ago, to an international attraction for couples, nature lovers and walkers.”
It is noted that the effort of the Municipality of Skopelos is ongoing for promotion in emerging markets, such as the French market, which in recent years has shown a strong preference for the Sporades.
“Mamma Mia in Skopelos is not a movie, it’s an experience. Those who visit Skopelos fall in love with the nature, the hospitality, the homely tastes, the picturesque alleys and the activities and eventually come back again and again because they become our friends. After all, this is the essence of the vacation we want to spend”, explains Eva Karamesini, the president of the Tourism Committee of the Municipality of Skopelos.
“Revival” of Mamma Mia at the famous rock
At the same time, with the aim of reviving the romantic atmosphere of Mamma Mia, the Municipality of Skopelos chose this year to appeal to the traveling public through an original music video starring the “flying” pianist Elena Xydia.
The artist’s piano was placed next to the chapel of Agios Ioannis at the top of the 100-meter-high rock in the context of long-hour filming that was carried out with the support of a large number of volunteers. Against the background of the blue-green waters of Skopelos, the “flying” pianist “revived” Mamma Mia by playing timeless compositions of ABBA on the piano.
