The Brazilian version of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, a Broadway adaptation of the queer cinema classic, features Reynaldo Gianecchini as Ticke, showing in São Paulo.
The actor, however, says he discovered an autoimmune disease during rehearsals for the play. Therefore, he had to go away for a few days because he could no longer balance himself. He was later discovered to have Guillain-Barré syndrome.
“I developed an autoimmune disease during the rehearsals that paralyzed my hands and legs. Everything started to tingle, I thought it was psychological, my nervousness, panic, but I never had panic”, he said in an appearance on the Pod Delas podcast.
The syndrome is a neurological condition in which the patient’s immune system cells attack the peripheral nervous system, making it difficult to transmit signals between the brain, spinal cord and muscles. This causes inflammation in the nerves, which progresses to sensations of numbness, tingling and muscle weakness, until reaching paralysis of the limbs.
Gianecchini claims that I only went to the doctor when I couldn’t get out of bed one morning to go to rehearsal.
“I was already falling during rehearsals, without balance. I went to the neurologist, he admitted me and I started treatment. I said ‘I need to be ready tomorrow’ and the doctor said that my body would still need to learn to walk again. I went to rehearsals, but I just watched. Today I dance with 15 centimeter heels.”
The actor also said that he was anxious because of the criticism he received after the casting of his name was announced. “People criticized me without even seeing my work.”
