Débora Falabella was chased for years by a fan, who even showed up at the door of the condominium where she lives, in São Paulo. The stalker is a resident of Recife, in Pernambuco, and went to the actress’s address by car, with suitcases. She asked to enter, but was not received.
On the same day, in the early evening, the woman returned to the address and found an employee of Débora walking a dog. She told the girl that she had “telepathic meetings” with the artist, in addition to shouting her name. The episode took place in July 2022, and led to the presentation of a complaint against the woman, for the crime of persecution, or stalking. The sentence ranges from 6 months to 2 years.
The existence of the stalker was revealed by Débora in an interview with the newspaper O Globo. The history of persecution began in 2013, when the fan entered the same elevator as the actress and asked for a photo.
The woman, now 40 years old, started sending gifts to the dressing room of places where the artist performed, as well as letters with an intimate and invasive content and intimidating messages on her cell phone. In 2015, Débora performed at the Sesc Copacabana theater and waited in a restricted space to, at the end of the play, try to force her way into the dressing room. She was forcibly removed by security guards.
“I’m scared, because you never know someone else, you never know what’s going to happen. It affects a lot of people, my family. It’s boring. Boring for everything, because I also want her to be well,” the actress told the newspaper. “It’s something I avoid talking about. Because there’s my story and her story, which certainly has problems. They’re making sure it’s in the best way possible, both for me and for her. We saw Baby Rena… I’ve never had contact, I don’t know her. It’s this fan relationship.
In the Netflix series Baby Reindeer, a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning) approaches aspiring comedian Donny (Richard Gadd, actor and author of the work) while he is working in a bar in London. Gadd says the series is based on in his real story and claims that he was obsessively stalked by Martha.
Fiona Harvey, the woman who says she inspired the character Martha, sued Netflix. She is asking for compensation of at least US$170 million and says she is being victim of defamation, emotional violence, negligence and violation of rights.
In the case of Débora, the stalker was arrested preventively in Recife, in February 2024. The suspect requested the revocation of the arrest and claimed mental disorders (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), but the Court denied the request and reiterated the need to carry out a psychiatric examination.
After psychiatric examination, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The expert report considered her unaccountable (unable to understand the illegality of her actions) and her preventive detention was revoked, but she must still comply with all precautionary measures to remove the actress.
