A vision of the previous management, but also of the current one, of the War Museum of Chalkida becomes a reality on Wednesday, June 19.
Through a well-organized operation, the turret of the Submarine Glaukos III arrives at the commercial port of Chalkida tomorrow at noon.
Its width is 22 meters, its height 8m. and its weight is 80 tons. The costs of its transportation are mostly covered by the region of Central Greece. It will be placed and will remain in the forecourt of the Museum.
The Glaukos III which traveled in 1974 together with the “Nireus”, to the coast of Cyprus and while the landing of the Turks on the coast of Kyrenia was in progress, was recalled twice.
For reasons that have not been clarified to this day, forced its captain to twice order “hold” on his engines and reverse his course, thus allowing Turkey to carry out the landing and occupation of part of Cyprus almost undisturbed.
Despite all this, there was a heroic warship that was ordered to defend the honor, justice and dignity of the Nations and its rightful place was forever after its retirement from active action, next to the “Averof” H/K and the A/T “Velos”.
It was the world’s first conventional type 209/1100 submarine, it was the first and homonymous in a series of four submarines owned by the Greek Navy. Ordered by the Greek government at HDW shipyards in Kiel, West Germany in November 1967. On 6 September 1971 she was received at Kiel. On December 6, 1971, she sailed to the Salamina naval station. From March 1996 to August 1998, modernization works took place at the facilities of the Salamis naval station for its operational and technological upgrade to the requirements of modern warfare. It had a height (without masts) of 11.38 meters. Glaukos III is the second submarine in the history of the Greek Navy with this name. The Glaukos II was the first submarine with the distinctive number Y-6 that operated during World War II.
It should be noted that the turret of the submarine that reaches Chalkida is the only part of it that has been saved. The rest of the submarine was lucky enough to pass through the press of a smelter.
