Panathinaikos AKTOR conquered it Euroleague and the official site of the competition started the established tributes to the players of the champions, through the column “Tribute to the Champs”.
The first Euroleague referred to was Ioannis Papapetrouwho may not have had an ideal start to the year due to an injury that plagued him, but he was pivotal in the final stretch and especially in the playoffs with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The official website of the competition also talked about the fact that the international forward won his first Euroleagueand he even did it with the team he supported since he was a kid.
In detail what the Euroleague writes:
“It’s not often that a player wins the EuroLeague with his favorite club and makes a significant contribution while doing so. This is exactly what happened to him Ioannis Papapetrou. But his story didn’t always look like it would turn out that way.
The 30-year-old forward, a former captain of the team he grew up as a fan of Panathinaikou as the son of a former club legend, he returned to the green last summer for his second spell with the club. This season, however, things have not been ideal for him Papapetrou who battled injuries for most of the season, made just one appearance in the first 22 rounds and played in just three games before matchday 27.
But with injuries and doubts finally behind him, and after taking some time down the stretch of the regular season, the Papapetrou began to produce some of the best we’ve seen from him in recent years in what looked to be the club’s most important spell in more than a decade.
After a brief appearance in the first game of the playoff series against her Maccabi Tel AvivPapapetrou played more than 28 minutes per game in the last four games of the series and averaged 12.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in those games.
Suddenly Papapaterou became a key factor in what Panathinaikos does on both ends of the floor and that continued in the Final Four. In Berlin, he was the team’s fourth leading scorer with 9 points and also collected 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the semifinals against Fenerbahce. Then, two days later, Mr Papapetrou contributed 4 points in 18 minutes of action in title win over Real Madrid.
It was his third career finals appearance in his 11th season in the competition – and fifth with the Panathinaikos. And now, Papapetrou can finally call himself its champion EuroLeague».
