Four-time Champions League winner, four-time German champion – Josefine Henning has had a great career. The former international with the German national team, however, decided to leave the fields for the sake of art. And today, as part of the European Championship in Germany, he has created various interactive art projects and creative workshops, which can be visited at the German Football Museum in Dortmund.
The exhibition “In Motion – Art & Football” manages to “marry” football with art, presenting many European works of art with the central theme of the king of sports, in an immersive experience for every visitor.
What do Dali, Polke and Lagerfeld have to do with football?
Many famous artists have made works with football elements. Surrealist Salvador Dali had painted his writer and friend Jaume Miravilliers as a muscular footballer, famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld had drawn a caricature of former West Germany international Uli Hennessy when his tax evasion scandal broke, while graffiti artist Banksy, who maintains his anonymity, has painted the “Football Terrorist”, a terrorist who does an upside down scissor. And all these works are displayed digitally in the Football Museum.
Each country participating in EURO 2024 is represented by at least one artist in the exhibition at the Dortmund museum, which also includes many rare works that have not been given much exposure.
In etwas mehr als einer Woche we will open the impressive, immersive Fußball-Kunst-Erlebnis “In Motion – Art & Football”.

During the last century football was something new. “The artists were impressed by how football began to have an effect on people’s lives. Although today it is a part of our lives, in the 20th century football was a new achievement,” explains museum director Manuel Neukirchner.
The parallel development of the arts and football
The Football Museum exhibition presents art and football as two phenomena that have more in common than one might think at first sight. Artists find many interesting elements in football, such as the movement and athleticism of the players. Futurism in the early 20th century in particular, exemplified by certain paintings by Umberto Boccioni, focused heavily on the movements of bodies in space that resemble large choreographies.
Furthermore, despite the fact that football has become commoditized in recent years, it continues to evoke very strong emotions and psychological transitions. Hand-to-hand combat, ball-talking magicians and only a thin line between humiliation and ultimate triumph – and in just 90 minutes. Where else are all these? Only in theater and cinema.
The museum exhibition tries to shed light on all aspects of football. As in reality, however, women are not represented as much as men in the exhibition. Even in art football is more… a man’s game. This is set to change however, with the German Football Museum already planning major changes to the permanent exhibition in order to boost the presence of women’s football. Henning is optimistic about the long-term development of women’s football.
Finally, there is a different room in the museum, which houses the original trophies from the four World Cups and three European Championships won by the National Football Team – which visitors can see up close!
You can visit the exhibition at the German Football Museum in Dortmund until January 25, 2025.
