Naomi Campbell has appeared on countless runways, starred in hundreds of fashion campaigns, and collaborated with the industry’s most renowned designers and photographers. Her career began at a young age, she was spotted in Covent Garden at just 15 and made history a few years later as the first black model to appear on the cover of Paris Vogue at 18 in 1988 and Time magazine.

She later became one of the first supermodels of the 1990s, along with Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer.

She was also the first black model on the cover of the main September issue of American Vogue.

Created in collaboration with Campbell, the exhibition showcases her voice and vision, according to the V&A Museum, “drawing on her haute couture wardrobe and ensembles from key moments in her career, together with loans from designer archives and objects from collections of the V&A’.

Thierry Mugler’s dramatic 1989 car-inspired corset, the creation Naomi Campbell presented at Sarah Burton’s latest Alexander McQueen fashion show, a pink Valentino ensemble worn at the 2019 Met Gala, and a pair of stunning blue Vivienne Westwood pumps that she was wearing when she fell on the catwalk in 1993 is one of the exhibits.

The exhibition, which opens on Saturday, features Campbell’s fashion photos and magazine covers curated by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enniful.

“There have been so many exhibitions of fashion designers and fashion photographers, but the model is often left out of the story” Sonnet Stanfield, curator of fashion at the V&A, told Reuters.

The exhibition, which runs until April 6, 2025, features written and audio commentary by Naomi Campbell reminiscing about key moments in her career, as well as an impromptu catwalk for those who want to emulate her catwalk walk.
