Europe has a duty to accommodate injured children from the war in Gaza for as long as the conflict lasts, the foreign minister points out, George Gerapetritis, speaking yesterday Wednesday to Reuters news agency.

“We must face this tragedy very clearly” notes Mr. Gerapetritis, adding that Europe should be open to such a perspective especially for children who are faced with hunger and other kinds of dangers.

Mr. Gerapetritis clarifies that this initiative not linked to regular migration. “This is an obvious call for humanitarian aid. We are not talking here about economic immigrants or any other type of irregular immigration,” notes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, underlining the terrible psychological impact of war to children.

The Foreign Minister also states that he spoke a few days ago with the Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and the Palestinian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Mustafa, while stressing the necessity immediate pacification and preparation of a reconstruction planof Gaza. “We should not wait for the war to stop in order to start discussing it,” said the foreign minister.

It is recalled that the protection of children in armed conflicts is one of the top priorities that Greece will have during its participation in the UN Security Council in the two years 2025-2026.

Asked about the situation in the Red Sea, Mr. Gerapetritis states: “I am relatively optimistic that together with the truce we hope to achieve in the very near future, the situation in the Red Sea will also improve significantly.”
