A Spanish judge has sentenced Spanish paparazzo Jordí Martín to one year in prison for one crime of harassment and another for causing injuries to Clara Chía Marti, girlfriend of former football player Gerard Piqué. He was responsible for revealing that Shakira’s ex-partner was having an affair with his employee.
In the decision, which was released this Wednesday (26), judge Jaume García Mendaza, from Criminal Court 14 in Barcelona, also banned the photographer from approaching or communicating with Chía for a year and a half. He will also pay compensation of 13 thousand euros (the equivalent of R$76 thousand) for moral damages
Martí can still appeal the sentence and, because the sentences are short (six months for each crime), the photographer should not go to prison, according to local newspaper “El País”. The decision is historic in Spain, being the first time that a photographer has been convicted of harassment.
The sentence considers it proven that Martín committed a crime of harassment because he “insistently and repeatedly” disturbed and made Clara Chía’s existence “unbearable” during at least 10 months of “intense” persecution.
On June 17, another trial at the Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office had acquitted the photographer who published photos of the 25-year-old’s relationship with the former player amid rumors of cheating while he was still married to Shakira. The paparazzo took to social media to celebrate the outcome and emphasize the “hatred” received by the former player throughout the process.
“Today I found myself again in court with Gerard Piqué and Clara Chía and I was able to confirm the hatred that Mr. Piqué feels towards me for taking the first photograph of his relationship with Clara and, furthermore, for my affection and love for Shakira and his entire family. I have a very positive feeling after hearing the Public Prosecutor’s assessment requesting my free acquittal”, wrote Martin.
Shakira and Piqué broke up in April 2022 and two months later, they officially announced their separation after 11 years together. Recently, the singer released a song with several hints towards her ex. In the lyrics, she even says “I’m worth two of 22, you traded a Ferrari for a Twingo”, as a provocation to the Spaniard’s new relationship, with the young Clara Chia, 23 years old. In another part of the song, Shakira mentions two watch brands and sings: “you traded a Rolex watch for a Casio”.
