Kevin Costner he’s starting to realize that passion projects don’t always pay off big. The former “Yellowstone” actor literally bet everything on it “Horizon: An American Saga”, mortgaging his Santa Barbara property and investing $38 million out of pocket. The second part will be released on August 16.

However, the film written, directed and starring Costner doesn’t seem to be doing well. It earned just $11 million in its first weekend in theaters.

This isn’t the first time a Costner passion project has gone awry. He produced, starred in and later directed 1995’s “Waterworld,” an ambitious blockbuster described as “Mad Max” in water. $22 million was lost – again his own money – and the film was then considered one of the most expensive productions ever made. Critics “buried” the film and life went on…

“Horizon” was supposed to be different. The Oscar-winning actor believed that he would cash in on the success of the “Yellowstone” series and that millions of his fans would flock to theaters to see him in yet another Western, this time directed by himself. Unfortunately, this did not happen.

According to “Variety,” Kevin Costner and his investors are paying for the marketing of “Horizon,” an expense that amounts to about $30 million. Warner Bros. he only gets 8% of the film’s grosses. This means that if the film can recover, the star will get a significant share of the revenue. If he fails, he will have to deal with the losses.
