The weekly magazine “Newsweek” published an article that caused an online uproar
On June 27, the “Newsweek” published an article (actually an opinion column) entitled: “H Taylor Swift it’s not a good role model.” It was an apparently clickbait article that became a global trending topic in just a day and a half.
“… Taylor Swift she’s the most famous woman I’ve ever seen: Her publicized romantic life has been tabloid fodder for years.
She has dated many men – at least a dozen – including singers Harry Styles and Joe Jonas, actor Jake Gyllenhaal and, most recently, Travis Kelce. Should we encourage young girls to look up to Taylor Swift? Would any loving parent reading this want their daughter to date 12 different men in a few years?…”writes, among others, the columnist.
The insults and characterizations emit such a sexist and ultra-conservative “bocha” that the first thing any critical reader might wonder is who the columnist is.
“The singer often dates powerful male celebrities who have significant social and financial power. This may seem hypocritical. Hypocrisy fundamentally undermines the ability to be a good role model because it involves a contradiction between one’s actions and the principles or values one publicly espouses.”the article continues. “Swift and Kells can hold and I hope they will. However, judging by her track record, the chances are not great.”
The columnist – named John McGhlionn – is listed as a “doctor of psychosocial studies, researcher and essayist”. However, after an exhaustive internet search one finds his signature in unreliable media (“poor” for their content) such as “The New York Post”, “The Spectator” and “The Sun” and various websites, which were created all after 2020.
All of the articles adhere to an editorial line, suspiciously similar to that which characterizes websites around the world, where certain columnists rabidly support Donald Trump.

The mysterious McGhlionn doesn’t have a Twitter account (or is currently suspended), but he does have one on Gettr, the social media platform created by Donald Trump’s former spokesman. Recall that this particular platform was created after the attack on the Capitol by supporters of Trump, which led the major platforms to deny him access. What happened after this article was published demonstrates how “fake” news and “trolls” can influence the global news agenda for days.
