After breaking out in “Euphoria” and making a splash in the romantic comedy “Everyone But You,” Sydney Sweeney, 26, has become one of Hollywood’s newest sweethearts. From drama to horror, comedy and suspense, the actress seems to be in (almost) everything.
But how did she get to this level of prestige in the mecca of cinema? Born in Spokane, Washington, but raised in Idaho, Sydney does not come from a family of artists. Her mother, Lisa, is a former criminal lawyer, while her father, Steven, works in the hotel industry. She is Trent’s older sister.
As a child, the actress made her interest in acting clear to her parents and made a slideshow with the reasons why they wanted her to pursue a career in the arts. According to an interview with American magazine Variety, her first audition was when she was 12 years old.
“My parents were very supportive. I would go to 5, 10 auditions a week and not get a single call back. I felt a responsibility to show them that it was worth it,” he said.
Sydney’s first major role was in the Netflix series “Everything Sucks” (2018). She then appeared in the second season of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, the series “Sharp Objects” alongside Amy Adams, and the first season of “The White Lotus”.
But it was really from “Euphoria” on that her career began to change levels. In the series, she played the desperate Cassie Howard (it was as this character that she starred in the famous scene of vomiting in the pool, while screaming in tears). And, from then on, she appeared more and more frequently in major productions.
PRODUCER
In 2020, Sydney founded her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, through which she brought the romantic comedy “Everyone But You” to the screen in 2023. In the film, she played Bea, Ben’s (Glen Powell) love interest. However, even before its premiere, the actors became news due to rumors of a possible off-camera relationship.
Videos of the two of them very close at events, exchanging glances accompanied by giggles and hands on their waists, were enough to excite fans. During production, the actor ended his three-year relationship with model Gigi Paris, which contributed even more to the public’s excitement.
After the release, the actress denied the rumors, but admitted that they were good for the success of the production, which grossed around US$ 200 million worldwide (around R$ 1.9 billion), according to Variety. “The two things you have to sell in a romantic comedy are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a lot of fun together, and we have a lot of effortless chemistry,” Powell justified in an interview.
It was also on this film that the artist acted for the first time as an executive producer — alongside her fiancé, Jonathan Davino, who was the executive producer. The two began dating in 2018.
She was then seen in “Madame Web”, a film based on a comic book spin-off of Spider-Man. Next came the horror film “Immaculada”, in which Sydney plays a nun living in a convent in the Italian countryside who becomes pregnant despite being a virgin (the script for the latter had been forgotten by the industry for years).
CRITICISM
Even though she doesn’t seem to deviate much from Hollywood’s beauty standards, the actress says she is criticized for her appearance. Some people sexualize her because of her large breasts (“I’m sorry I have great breasts,” she once warned in a humorous T-shirt) and others dare to define her as ugly.
She even cried during a live stream when talking about the comments. “I think it’s really important for people to see how words affect people. People need to be nicer on social media because this is really sick.”
Another controversy related to the actress occurred in 2022, during her mother’s 60th birthday party. Hats worn by guests with the words “make sixty great again” alluded to Donald Trump’s slogan and, in one of the photos, a man appeared wearing a Blue Lives Matter t-shirt, which advocates treating the death of police officers as a hate crime and was created in response to Black Lives Matter.
“Guys, this is crazy. An innocent celebration turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions,” she said on X (formerly Twitter).
