Thai actress Nida Patcharaweeraphong dies after speedboat accident

by

Thai actress Nida Patcharaweeraphong, 37, also known by her nickname Tang Mo, was found dead on Saturday (26). She was on a speedboat ride with five other friends on Thursday when she fell into the Chao Phraya River, which flows through Bangkok.

The last time she was seen by her friends, she was sitting in the back of the boat, but no one saw the moment of her fall. They spent 20 minutes looking around for her before they decided to ask for professional help.

About 30 divers searched the area without success. It wasn’t until two days later that authorities found the actress’ body floating about 300 meters away from Pibulsongkram Pier, where she was last seen.

“The pain that the whole family is going through is immeasurable. We loved our sister very much and she brought us so much happiness,” said the actress’ brother Dais Dejjab. “I want to thank everyone for their effort. I came to take you home now.”

According to the actress’ mother, Panida Siriyuthyothin, she could swim very well and, therefore, cannot believe that the cause of death was drowning. “When I heard the news . . . I was still hoping it wasn’t her.”

The doctors who performed the autopsy of the actress confirmed that the cause of death was, in fact, drowning and that she was probably hit by the speedboat’s propeller, as she had a deep cut on her left leg.

The police said that the owner of the boat and the person responsible for piloting it could receive punishments for negligence since the vehicle had an expired license, as well as the driver’s license. However, to date, no formal charges have been filed.
