Regina Duarte took to social media on Monday (15) to apologize for her conviction in the lawsuit filed by director and screenwriter Janaína Diniz Guerra, daughter of Leila Diniz. The actress published the full document on her Instagram.
Regina was ordered to pay R$30,000 in compensation to the late actress’s daughter for the improper use of a photo that was included in a video she made in support of the military dictatorship. The video features Leila Diniz, alongside actresses Eva Todor, Tônia Carrero, Eva Wilma, Odete Lara and Norma Bengell, who were protesting against the censorship imposed by AI-5.
The court ruled that Regina distorted the purpose of the demonstration, implying that the women supported the coup. In June, the actress said that she had received several donations from fans to pay compensation to Janaina. She is continuing with the lawsuit.
Regina wrote on social media that she intended to highlight “the value and strength” of women in the record, which was deleted, by order of the Court.[Ao publicar a foto] I thought I was highlighting the value and strength of women, through that group of actresses that I loved, respected and who were an example to me: they fought for their democratic rights and freedom of expression.”
“I did what I did in good faith. I never imagined that anyone could interpret my post differently or feel wronged,” Regina wrote. “I apologize for having used an image taken in 1968 referring, in the video, to a movement by Brazilian women in 1964,” she added.
She published the sentence, approved by judge Keyla Blank, in full in the post.
