The conversation between Drew Barrymore and Andie MacDowell was an impressive display of social stereotypes. The presenter and actress, who is 49, asked her 66-year-old colleague if she was single.

She then commented that she was in a similar situation and started a conversation about how difficult it is to go from one lazy date to the next, and how you deal with not only the lack of a partner, but also the social expectations imposed by others.

Read their dialogue:

-Drew Barrymore: Are you single?

-Andie MacDowell: I’m totally single.

-DB: I am also completely single.

-AMD: Yes, but you have to date, I don’t.

-DB: For half a minute, why should I date?

-AMD: You know, because you’re young, now you have to do it. Because as you get older you care less and less. I’m sorry to tell you.

-DB: I think I’ve already reached that point.

-AMD: You haven’t gotten there yet.

-DB: Since I started dating so young, think we’ve been partying together since I was ten – and now I’m 49, I’m not crazy and I’m not that interested.

-AMD: I know what you mean.

-DB: I am very happy with my life.

-AMD: I know what you mean. I also want to say that I got really tired. Everyone was asking me, is there a man in your life? But now for years no one asks and that’s nice. But we’ve evolved so much as people and I don’t think there’s any problem with being single, really. I have fantastic female friends and some male friends too.”
