“A unique, wonderful experience. Music is my life. Music is strength,” said bassist Branco Mello, in a video, after participating in a recording of the song “É Preciso Saber Viver”, by Titãs, (a band he has played in since 1982) with the “Coral Sua Voz”, made up of patients who lost their voices due to laryngeal or mouth cancer.
The recording of the project, carried out at the AC Camargo Cancer Center, was published on the São Paulo hospital’s YouTube channel and moved patients undergoing treatment at the unit, as well as other followers.
On Instagram, an excerpt from the video published jointly by Branco and the hospital’s profiles received over 30,000 reactions and 7,000 shares.

The choir is made up of patients who, once affected by the pathology, underwent surgery at the unit, resulting in significant loss of voice.
The same thing happened to Branco at the end of last year. The artist, who had been treating laryngeal cancer since 2018, had to undergo surgery to remove a tumor on his tongue. The treatments affected his vocal cords, damaging his voice. In addition to playing bass, Branco also sang in Titãs.
“Both patients who have had larynx surgery and mouth surgery have vocal limitations. So the music is chosen according to their possibilities, obviously, but it allows training in the melody and breathing pauses”, which is a great addition from a technical point of view, explained speech therapist and creator of the choir “Sua Voz”, Elisabete Carrara.
“In addition to the power of music, of emotions, of being able to sing in a group,” continued Carrara.
In the publication, patients reported that the choir’s activity is an ally in recovering self-esteem after surgery.
“The choir’s music has been very comforting to me. I went through a period of depression and coming to the choir cheers me up,” said Christiane de Brito Marques, a hospital patient and one of the group’s members.
“Even if there is a sequel, it is possible to be happy, to sing, to come back to life,” added Carrara.
“Exciting, incredible and magical! This choir is very special,” commented a user on the publication on YouTube, where the video already has just over 5 thousand views.
The unit indicated in the publication that this is a first episode carried out, which precedes new publications.
