Snoop Dogg will be covering the Paris Olympics on an American network. The rapper will be commentating on the sports competitions alongside NBC sports journalists. He will also interview athletes and their families over the two weeks of the Games.
He has been in the city since last week and carried the Olympic torch through the suburbs of the French capital. Calvin Broadus, Jr., the singer’s real name, is an investment by the channel to attract a young audience to its streaming service and with fun sketches on social media.
The change of scenery may seem strange to the viewer, but the hip-hop legend already has a strategy. “My preparation for prime time is to be me. Google me. I’ve been to sporting events. I know the sport and the conversations,” he told American magazine Variety.
Snoop’s casting for the event was months in the making, and he flew to Paris about ten days before the event to get into the spirit of the competition.
“I’ve been going into the training facilities of different teams, judo, weightlifting, basketball, fencing. I’m one of those guys who likes to get involved. I talk to the athletes to get to know their story.”
The change of scenery for the artist, known for his light-hearted and funny image (and as a defender of marijuana use in the country), may seem recent to those who have followed him for years. But it is not new.
Dogg has been involved in sports for a number of years. One of his sons played college football, and in 2021, the rapper commentated on the Tokyo Olympics on a show with comedian Kevin Hart. This year, he became a sponsor of a soccer team in the US state of Arizona.
NBC says the decision to call him that was strategic. NBC Sports President Rick Cordella said the network wants to innovate and respond to today’s media landscape.
“Celebrities wouldn’t have been part of the channel’s Olympics coverage in the past. Now they’re a key element,” he told Variety.
In a video published on the channel’s official TikTok, the author of “Drop It Like It’s Hot” comments on an obstacle course in a fun way. The publication received no shortage of approval.
“The Olympics with Snoop is my new favorite experience,” wrote Lauren Edelstein’s profile. “He’s the best commentator,” Ashley opined.
