The winner of the Miss Grand Mato Grosso 2024 contest, Maria Vitória Rondon, 19, renounced her title three days after being elected champion by the event’s jury. The announcement of her withdrawal was made via a video on her Instagram, on Monday (29). She alleged humiliation and lack of support from the organizers, who claim that she was never left unwelcome.
“I thought that mourning was the worst feeling one could feel, but that day I realized that the worst feeling is humiliation and rejection. I felt angry, humiliated and small. I left the event in tears,” said Maria Vitória, who is a journalism student at UFMT (Federal University of Mato Grosso) and works as a social media representative in the communications department of the government of Mato Grosso.
To the F5she spoke about the impact of the experience on her confidence and self-esteem. “I resigned because I would be working with people who didn’t want to work with me,” she said. “As much as they say I would feel welcome, I don’t feel comfortable working with people who don’t believe in my potential. I started to question my values, my appearance. How would I go to Miss Brazil feeling confident and knowing that the coordinators didn’t like me?”
According to the national president of Miss Grand Brasil, Evandro Hazzy, who was at the regional event, Maria Vitória’s decision was personal and not related to the treatment she received by the organization. “We live in a country where the Constitution is clear. We have the right to choose and the right to come and go,” he said.
“She won the judges’ vote. She was the one who wanted to not participate,” Hazzy said. “The organization welcomed her like everyone else, with the same rights. She, and she alone, said she didn’t feel comfortable, but that was just her part.”
Maria Vitória says that confinement for Miss Grand Mato Grosso began last Thursday (25) in a hotel in Cuiabá. The final took place the following day, in a shopping mall in the city. After being announced as the champion, Maria Vitória gave interviews and did a photo shoot.
“That’s when I realized that the state and national coordination didn’t congratulate me. They were with the representative of Brasnorte, Taiany Zimpel, the second placed,” he said.
After serving the public, she went to where her family and friends were. “The first thing I said was ‘I’m not happy’ and I started crying,” she recalls.
According to the Miss’s makeup artist, Maurício Abreu, the president of Miss Grand Brasil, Evandro Hazzy, said that she did not fit the organization’s desired standard. “He told me that Maria Vitória has a very pretty face, but that she was not the profile he was looking for. He said that his favorite was Taiany,” he reported.
During the event, Maria Vitória tried to understand the situation and approached the coordinators backstage. “The national coordinator congratulated me, but only because I went to him. The state coordinator left the table when I approached him,” she reported.
After leaving the event, she went to the hotel to collect her belongings, when she met the state coordinator, Willon Warner. “He said that everyone has their own opinion and that I won because I deserved it, but that I was not his candidate,” she said.
According to Maria Vitória, Willon called her on Saturday (27) apologizing for what happened, but made it clear that he still maintained the opinion that she should not be the winner.
On Saturday, during an Instagram live, Hazzy spoke out when asked about the result of Miss Grand Mato Grosso. “She wasn’t my candidate, but I wish her luck and success, and nothing else,” he said.
On Sunday (28), Willon called again after hearing rumors that the champion would renounce the title. “He wanted to know what the situation was, since he would already issue the ticket on Monday. He wanted an answer right away,” said Maria Vitória. According to her, the coordinator did not try to dissuade her from changing her mind.
With the resignation, runner-up Taiany Zimpel, 26, will assume the title. She will compete in the Miss Grand Brazil final on August 8, at the Tokio Marine Hall, in São Paulo.
