A few days ago, I was nostalgic for my childhood and the music I used to listen to back then, and I sat down to look for old CDs, stirring up my mother’s collections. Basically, I think I was more nostalgic about how we listened to music then compared to now and I kind of wanted to remember those good old days, but here we go.

So when I was looking for the CDs I listened to non stop and danced to as a child I found Beyonce’s ultimate album, “Dangerously in Love”, which was released in 2003 (I was born in 2002 but that doesn’t matter, it was one of my favorites). I remember when I was little, as soon as I got this CD in my hands, I looked at the cover photo and more specifically I was impressed by how shiny and beautiful she was in this photo, since I don’t hide that I have a weakness for anything that shines (I liked it her diamond top and glittery makeup).

Where do I want to end up? Because of this nostalgia that hit me, I sat down and searched and found all the secrets behind Beyonce’s then-iconic look for her ‘Dangerously in Love’ album cover shoot. From the stunning top with diamonds, to her dreamy makeup look that radiates, let’s see it all.

Back to 2003: All the secrets to Beyonce’s stunning makeup

Makeup artist Mally Roncal was responsible for this beautiful makeup. The first time Mally Roncal did Beyoncé’s makeup, it was really off the schedule. “It was literally a last-minute situation, which turned out to be very typical of Beyoncé’s makeup,” Roncal said in an interview with NewBeauty.

Of course, it refers to the iconic cover of her 2003 album “Dangerously in Love”, in which Beyoncé wears a diamond top and looks absolutely stunning.

This look helped define makeup and ushered in an era where we accepted true, natural beauty,” says Roncal. The photo is so iconic that it is in the Smithsonian Museum. A fun moment she remembers from back then was when Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, brought the diamond top and some options to pair underneath. However, Beyoncé just wanted to wear jeans, so the photographer brought some of his own, which she ends up wearing in the photo.

Roncal has many backstage stories of that special day. She revealed how she created this timeless look on Queen B herself, and how her years working with the star helped shape Mally Beauty (her own brand).

She wasn’t wearing foundation

Beyoncé wore almost no foundation at the photo shoot. The first thing Roncal remembers noticing about Beyoncé is that her skin “was really flawless.” To achieve this, the secret lies in the fact that she used almost no foundation for this look.

“She was so beautiful. I didn’t want to cover any of that up,” says Roncal. “I always like to point out how incredibly beautiful she is. This helped me rethink what makeup is.” While Roncal notes that she’s an ’80s girl and loves full glam, she knows it’s not for every occasion.

“A big philosophy I have is that we don’t need to wear foundation all the time,” she says. So, in this case, Roncal used a moisturizing foundation on a few areas of her face, that is, where she felt it was needed. “I think it’s a much more modern way of approaching makeup, rather than wiping it off and then putting it back on.”

As for this look, Roncal believes it was iconic because “it was her. It was her skin, her eyes, her lips.” Instead of putting on tons of makeup from scratch, Roncal prefers to apply thin layers of different textures “that combine to give a very natural, healthy look.”

The look involved a lot of skincare

“Preparation of the skin always plays an important role in order for a make-up to be flawless. It needs hydration, a lot of hydration,” says Roncal. In an ideal world, when time permits, she likes to do a 30-minute skin care routine, which also includes a massage to prep the skin for makeup.

Use minimal powder

Roncal grew up using a lot of powder, but has since cut back on it, saying it’s a “big no” for her after realizing it’s not essential to a makeup look by making it heavier. She used minimal powder makeup on Beyoncé for this shoot. “It was only where we needed it, like between the eyebrows, very little under the eyes to avoid the concealer breaking, on each side of the nose and a little on the chin, but leaving the rest of the skin looking healthy and glowing.” .

She used her own DIY highlighter

Roncal was the one who “birthed” the highlighter trend. “I didn’t have highlighters because they weren’t on the market. So I made this highlighter by crushing eyeshadows that I mixed with pigments,” says Roncal. “I literally created this highlighter that’s on her face, in the corners of her eyes, on her nose, everywhere.” You get the ultimate glowy effect on the face by placing the highlighter in the right, “strategic” parts of the face and not just all over the face, he notes.

“Shiny” eyebrows

Beyoncé’s eyebrows have a slight, glossy sheen in the photo. Back then, brow gels were often thick and dried too matte, but Roncal was determined to give the star the ultimate shine to her brows too. She used MAC Lipglass on Beyoncé’s brows and combed them with a brow comb for a shiny look.

“That’s what I love about makeup, playing with makeup and being able to put products on parts of the face that aren’t necessarily designed for there and create a nice, slightly messy effect,” says Roncal. “I remember him saying, ‘What are you doing?’ And I told her, ‘Trust me. We’ll try it.”

Thin eyeliner

“The eyeliner, for me, is obviously very important in this photo. We drew a very thin line, we did tight lining. Keeping the eyeliner thin is really important, especially in a photo. You want to look bright and fresh,” says Roncal. She knows that many people love a bold and often thick eyeliner line, but it’s not always the best choice because it makes the eyes look closed rather than big, she notes.

Glossy lips

Beyoncé’s lips are a point of attention in this makeup. Roncal says she wanted to have shiny, healthy lips. She states, “lip liner can be your best friend when it comes to defining your lips, making your lips shine and look healthy.” It’s no surprise that Roncal made the lip gloss that Beyoncé wears. “It was just a beautiful soft caramel, no shimmer in it, completely matte, which gave the lips a beautiful shine.” Roncal also applied some of the gloss to Beyoncé’s cheekbones.
