When creating an eye look, it’s important to choose shadows that match your eye color. Likewise, when painting your lips, try to choose shades that blend with your skin tone or hair color.

You want everything to be in harmony with each other. However, if you think your options are limited only here, you are wrong. Equally important is choosing the right shades for contouring that match your skin tone, for an even and flattering effect. See how!

Experiment with shades

A contouring palette is great to start with as it contains all the shades you need to experiment with. In the palette you will also find the right shade for your skin. The good thing about these palettes is that they allow you to create the perfect shade by mixing different colors together.

For example, you can combine a lighter shade with a darker one to create a softer effect. Alternatively, you can use a shade that you think is ideal for your skin and lighten the area under the contouring with lighter shades. Experiment with colors until you find the one that suits you best!

Choose shades that mimic the natural shades of your face

To achieve a natural look that does not betray the contouring, use shades that are close to the natural shading of your face.

-For fair and medium skin tones: Choose neutral shades, such as light beige.

-For more tanned skin: Choose shades with golden undertones to maintain the bronzed look.

-For very dark skin: Use the darkest shades, such as dark brown, to avoid a gray tint in contouring.

Cream Vs. Powder Contouring

Contouring should look like a natural shadow created by the bone structure of your face, not makeup. Thus, you will emphasize your cheekbones and give your face a geometric and slim look. Many makeup artists recommend using either darker concealers for contouring, or cream products. These become one with the skin, offering a natural look.

For simple contouring, use a shade. For a more professional result with sculpted lines, you’ll need two tones to achieve the perfect light shading on the skin.

Powder contouring products are lighter and suitable for beginners as it is difficult to overdo it. A palette will serve you all year round, even if your skin tans in the summer.

If you want a darker and more dramatic effect (perfect for photos), you can contour with a cream product and then enhance it with a powder product on top. Thus, the result will last longer!
