Carnival designer Milton Cunha closed the coverage of the Olympics on CazéTV with his participation in the broadcast of the closing ceremony this Sunday (11). At the end of the event, he highlighted the importance of LGBT+ visibility in the Games and said it was an honor to be part of the broadcast.
Cunha celebrated his experience covering the Olympics. A former Carnival designer for Rio schools such as Beija-Flor, União da Ilha, Unidos da Tijuca, São Clemente and Viradouro, and for São Paulo’s Leandro de Itaquera, Cunha, 62, has been a Carnival commentator for Globo for 11 years and also does pre-parade reports with characters from the world of samba.
He cited the pole vaulter Tom Daley as an example. “The scene with the pole vaulter, he dedicates his medal to his husband and two little children. And then, on a worldwide network, you have the visibility of us, gays,” he said.
“And the courage of CazéTV to invite me, to bring me to this other, different universe, of the people of sports and such, and without fear, with the courage to mix. Courage to say, my love, democracy, freedom, everything fits. Mix it up and it will work out”, commented the carnival artist.
“So, it was my honor to be with you and may this courage of CazéTV reach other aspects so that we can, in a good way, mix good humor, sports, beauty, culture and joy. This funny look, of taking the athletes’ names and making jokes with them”, he added.
Cunha was a topic on X (formerly Twitter) during the closing ceremony because he was excited about the participation of Greek athlete Emmanoiul Karallis. “Wow… You rocked it, Karallis. Starting with Karallis is a huge deal. Long live Karallis!”, he said during the broadcast.
