Preta Gil launches book and says autobiography took her family by surprise

Days after turning 50, Preta Gil is releasing her first autobiography. She wants to make her story even more open, as it has taken unimaginable turns in recent months, marked by cancer treatment and the end of her marriage. “Preta Gil: the first 50” is the singer’s new work, now as a writer.

At the launch event for the work in São Paulo this Tuesday (12), Preta told F5 that there was no other time to make it public than now: “I started writing in 2018, I stopped because I went through a very complicated oncological treatment last year and I started putting some stories on paper again.”

The singer says that her father, Gilberto Gil, as well as her brothers, had no participation in the production and were taken by surprise with the book: “They all participated, because they are our stories. It is my perspective based on stories we lived together, but they are all surprised. It is a surprise even for those who are very close to me, because it is my perspective”, she said.

“My father is already halfway through and he’s loving it. My sisters have also read it and loved it,” Preta said about the singer and his children. “My son and my niece are also reading it,” she added, mentioning Francisco Muller and Flor Gil, with whom she is very close.

In the book, the singer recounts moments of peak and success, such as her Carnival block, as well as difficult times, such as the discovery and treatment of cancer and the betrayal and end of her marriage. Her ex-husband, Rodrigo Godoy, spoke out on social media this Tuesday (13) and said that he will also release his version of the story.

But Preta doesn’t let herself get shaken and says she wants to make the most of the next 50 years: “After all this treatment, I live very much in the here and now. I’m full of plans and full of dreams.”
