Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein released in a medical bulletin at 11 am the cause of death of Silvio Santos, aged 93.

According to the hospital, the presenter died at 4:50 am this Saturday (17) as a result of bronchopneumonia after infection with Influenza (H1N1).

Bronchopneumonia causes inflammation in the alveoli, which are the structures in the lungs that exchange oxygen with the blood. And pneumonia is caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi that compromise the lung structures.

Competitors from SBT, Globo and Record opened a special session to pay tribute to the presenter. Journalist Zileide Silva began hosting a special Jornal Hoje about the presenter’s career at Globo.

On Record, Fala Brasil, a news program shown every morning on Edir Macedo’s TV, also interrupted its programming to talk exclusively about Silvio’s death.

But those who watched SBT on Saturday morning (17) were not informed of a shocking news for the entire country — and especially for the channel: Silvio Santos, its owner and the most important figure in its history, had died. The channel chose to continue its normal life and showed the program Sábado Animado, with the showing of the cartoon Scooby-Doo.

Many celebrities mourned his death on social media, such as former broadcaster colleagues Eliana and Celso Portiolli.
