Sentenced to more than eight years in prison for racially abusing Titi, the daughter of Bruno Gagliasso and Giovanna Ewbank, Day McCarthy was in despair upon learning of the sentence. In a video circulating on social media, the socialite cries and says she regrets the incident that occurred in 2017, when she made racist insults to the child, who was four years old at the time.
The video in which Day appears receiving her sentence was made by lawyer Gil Ortuzal, and authorized by her. “I regret it a lot, I feel ashamed, but I don’t want to be condemned for the rest of my life for something from years ago. I changed and reviewed my concepts. I am a different person and I was resurrected,” says the socialite, who seems to have been surprised by the sentence, the highest penalty ever handed down by the Brazilian justice system against a citizen for committing racial slurs.
Day continues to lament. “I don’t owe anything to the courts. No one can judge me anymore. I paid R$180,000, I apologized to Titi, Bruno Gagliasso, Giovanna Ewbank, I paid all the lawyers’ fees,” emphasizes the influencer, who claims to have changed. “I’m a different person. I’m a good-hearted person and I’m helping the police. You have no idea how many hours of my day I spend providing services to the community.”
She also asks that the lawyer return to work on the case and that he appeal the sentence: “I’m a first-time offender and I think that a sentence of almost 9 years is a little high, for a person who doesn’t traffic drugs and has never been convicted of a heinous crime.” Day was sentenced to eight years, nine months and 13 days in prison.
Last Friday (23), after receiving the news that they had won the lawsuit filed against the socialite, Giovanna Ewbank and Bruno Gagliasso celebrated Day’s conviction. “Today we come to celebrate a victory against racism. And we know that, unfortunately, this victory happens because we are visible and white and, therefore, more heard than the black population that, since being kidnapped to this country, has not stopped screaming and bleeding. It is never too late, but it is still too late”, they wrote in a note published on their social networks.
