Newspapers and websites specializing in film coverage are anticipating Fernanda Torres in the running for the 2025 Oscar for best actress.

The Brazilian, star of “I’m Still Here”, by Walter Salles, appears on lists such as that of Variety magazine, which called her performance “superb” and “deeply poignant”.

Variety’s list of ten actresses who could compete for an Oscar includes, alongside Fernanda, Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Julianne Moore (“The Room Next Door”), Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Karla Sofía Gascon (“Emilia Pérez”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), and June Squibb (“Thelma”). Only five artists are nominated in each category.

“I’m Still Here”, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, received a ten-minute round of applause and received praise from international critics.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, which tells the story of his father, Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), who was arrested, tortured and killed by the military dictatorship. Fernanda Torres plays Eunice Paiva, the writer’s mother.

Other websites such as Indiewire, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter also praised the actress’s work and pointed to her as a possible nominee by the Academy. “Fernanda Torres is as spectacular as her filmography suggests,” said the first, which classified the film as a “moving historical record of Brazil.”

If nominated, Fernanda will have the chance to “avenge” her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, nominated for an Oscar for best actress in 1999 for “Central do Brasil”, also directed by Walter Salles. The actress lost to Gwyneth Paltrow in “Shakespeare in Love”.
