Kate Winslet said photographer Lee Miller, whom she plays in a new biopic, “faced so many challenges” as a female war photojournalist.

The 48-year-old actress speaking to the PA news agency at the premiere of the film “Lee” in London at the Odeon Luxe, she said: “Lee faced so many challenges. I mean, first of all, she was doing a job that was largely a male domain.”

“So she had been told repeatedly, no, you can’t go, they won’t send women, no women in the press briefing, we don’t allow women in the war” said the English actress.

The film traces Miller’s life, from her beginnings as a fashion model to her difficult assignment as a war photographer for Vogue magazine during World War II.

“Well, I think she was one of those first photojournalists who really knew how to seek the truth, to reveal the truth, and the way she photographed was extraordinary.” Kate Winslet said.

Lee Miller recorded the German bombing of London on camera in 1944 and as an accredited American war photographer followed American troops.
