We are here with you at the end of the homeland to give the local community an important monument of the region” said the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni immediately after the closing ceremony of the historic Pammegiston Taxiarchon Monastery (Moni Tsoukas) which took place today in the mountainous location of Nestorios in Kastoria.

It is a monastery dating back to 1255, for which the Emperor Palaeologists of Byzantium had offered donations for its illustration, but it was mostly destroyed by arson caused by the German occupation troops in March 1943.

The Archaeological Service of Kastoria in collaboration with the Region of Western Macedonia and the Ministry of Culture undertook the restoration of important parts of the temple, the strengthening of the bearing Organization and other works necessary for the sustainability of the monument.

The Minister of Culture, addressing the residents of the area and the local authorities, the Regional Governor G. Amanatidis, the Metropolitan of Kastoria Kallinikos and the municipality of Nestorio, promised that “the restoration work of the monument will continue in the future with new funding that will be found either from the Recovery Fund or from other regions and European programs”. He then visited the monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa in Kastoria, where he was informed by the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kastoria, Andromachi Skrekas, about the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the frescoes.
