In the epilogue of her new memoir, Hillary Clinton writes what sounds like a distant wish:

I hope to live to see the United States elect a woman President».

It seems her new book went to press before Kamala Harris secured the Democratic nomination for the US presidency, making her wish seem more possible today than ever.

Something Lost, Something Gained, published by Simon & Schuster, is her third biography, following 2003’s Living History and What Happened? in 2017, talking about her heartbreaking loss to Donald Trump.

It is inspired by the song “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell and aspires to convey how she sees the world today through her multifaceted career and countless life experiences, as a lawyer, first lady, senator, secretary of state, candidate for President of the United States and now a teacher, Broadway producer, grandmother and wife.

Through its pages, it recounts in detail an operation to rescue women in Afghanistan when the Taliban took power in 2021, wonders in the next chapter about the unique “sisterhood” of former first ladies, while at another point it defends the Melania Trump on the criticism she received for her appearance at Rosalyn Carter’s memorial service.

Of course she does not hide her dislike for Donald Trump.
