The research revealed that in his music there are very intense “fractal” structures, which only scientific analysis can detect
His music Michael Pauri, of the musician who incorporated the bouzouki into classical music and jazz and has won a series of international awards for his instrumental performances and compositions, is gaining scientific recognitionwith the composition “Diaphonies” to be the subject of international research.
It is about the internationally renowned Greek musician and composer Michalis Paouris who continues to conquer new heights, not only in the field of music but also in the scientific field, given that a new study by the University of Western Attica, led by Professor Dimitris Nikolopoulos, which was published in the prestigious journal Mathematics, highlights the composition of Paouris “Diaphonies” as a work of unique complexity.
The research revealed that there are very strong “fractal” structures in Paouris’ music, meaning that his music contains patterns that repeat in ways that only scientific analysis can detect. The fractals of Michalis Paouri’s music indicate non-linear behavior, which characterizes the human brain and has recently been associated with the beneficial effect of music on it. This finding confirms the complexity and innovation of his music, making Paouris one of the few composers worldwide whose music has been studied in such depth, while at the same time proving what his fans have long known. In other words, the music of the musician Michalis Paouris is not simply the result of technical skill, but also of a deeper, complex creative process.
After this step, Michalis Paouris will be the first living composer to have his music submitted for research and his name is placed next to the composers that the global scientific community engaged in order to analyze and understand the musical way of expressing ideas. At the same time, the bouzouki enters the highest scientific level for the first time in the history of music and science. A great achievement and perhaps the ultimate recognition for a soloist-composer. The analysis of the composition of “Diaphonies” opens new avenues for the understanding of music as art and science, making Paouris a pioneer on a global level.
He was the first, as has been recorded internationally, to integrate the Greek bouzouki into Jazz and is the musician whose compositions in classical music and Jazz are characterized by connoisseurs and other composers as the most innovative ideas in the 100-year history of the instrument. Mikis Theodorakis had told him that he reminded him of Chiotis, at the same time characterizing him as a phenomenon, when the unforgettable music composer had heard him at a young age. World-renowned guitar virtuoso Al Di Meola said of Michalis Paouris: “He is the fastest bouzouki player on planet earth. He has incredible musical instincts. He is a humble genius.” Dionysis Savvopoulos said that as soon as he starts playing you are left with your mouth open: “…he plays so fast, his fingers are ultrasonic. He is chasing a self that is constantly advancing.” Christos Nikolopoulos, such a great composer and yet has said that “we didn’t touch him even to his little fingernail. The achievements that Michalis achieved were not achieved by anyone, neither the old ones nor us younger ones”.
With 46 music albums which are all free on the internet, Michalis Paouris, as he says, wants to share his music with the world, with young children and music school students, while he has been awarded the 1st International Classical Music Prize several times .
Speaking to the Athens Agency, he spoke of a scientific and research innovation “by Greek scientists who wanted to decode what is happening in the way I compose and play. I perceive all this as a beautiful struggle, so that the power of music, the truth of composition and the balance that can exist between art and science, reach where they should be.” As Michalis Paouris mentioned, he is currently collaborating with a group of artists from abroad, of international fame, with the aim of creating a musical project, a record for the Grammy Awards.
