At 93 years old, the legendary Cuban singer Lobster Portuondothe diva of the popular band Buena Vista Social Clubis ending her career, her son and artistic agent announced yesterday Thursday.

“We feel it necessary to announce the final departure of Omara from the stage next Sunday, after an appearance in Budapest”said Ariel Jimenez, her only son, via Facebook.

The singer’s son and agent explained that during a concert in Barcelona, Omara Portuondo showed “signs of fatigue and disorientation” and had to withdraw from the stage, where she was performing with a Cuban band.

She is “well”, receiving “care” and is under the “monitoring of her personal doctor”, who accompanies her on her tours, added Mr Jimenez. He clarified that his mother will not sing at the farewell concert in Budapest, essentially a tribute to her.

Born on October 29, 1930 in Havana, Omara Portuondo, known for her warm, velvety voice, experimented during her long career with various genres of Cuban music, from boleros to “filin” (or “feeling”), romantic style influenced by North American jazz.

Her participation in the Buena Vista Social Club, a musical venture in the late 1990s in which forgotten glories of the golden age of Cuban music were persuaded to participate, made her known much more widely — all over the world. The unexpected triumph led to the release of the album Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo. Among other things, the singer was honored with two Grammy Awards for the Latin American scene, thanks to the albums Gracias (2009) and Vida (2023).
