Andy Warhol was, is and will be one of the most enigmatic figures in the art world. That’s why he can be considered the only reliable narrator to tell his own story. Of course, this is no longer difficult, given the technology and artificial intelligence.
Ryan Murphy and Netflix join forces for a documentary starring Andy Warhol
The documentary series The Andy Warhol Diaries will consist of 6 episodes and is based on the book of the same name by Pat Hackett. She was a friend of the artist and often a collaborator throughout his life. So when he decided to narrate his life, he trusted that idea to record his thoughts. However, today, Ryan Murphy wondered: What would it be like if Warhol himself could tell his life to the public?
With that in mind, an effort was made to create an artificial intelligence program that could mimic the voice of Andy Warhol. Of course, the Warhol Foundation gave its consent to this effort and eventually it became possible. So, through these 6 episodes we will have the opportunity to see and hear Warhol himself tell stories from his life that cover the period from 1976 to 1989.
This is an effort that has encountered several obstacles
Imitating someone else’s voice is relatively easy. But being able to accurately convey the color of this voice, its pauses, its breaths and everything that makes it up, is something completely different. This was the biggest challenge for this project.
The program that created these narratives from the beginning had to take into account the many different videos of Andy Warhol alive, in order to achieve the best possible result. The creators of the series remained faithful to their effort, despite the obstacles that constantly arose. After all, they believed that in order to understand how far ahead Andy Warhol was for his time, we would have to listen to him in his own voice, through his own words.
The documentary series will premiere on Netflix on March 9.
