A Fender Stratocaster electric guitar that belonged to legendary rock and blues musician Rory Gallagher is to be handed over to the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) after being sold at a Bonhams auction in London.

The late artist’s guitar was bought for £889,400 (€1,068,956) by Live Nation Gaiety Ltd, for the donation.

The purchase agreement ensures that the Fender Stratocaster – “one of the world’s most famous guitars” will now remain in the ownership of the Irish state and will be available for display to the public and Gallagher fans around the world.

Gallagher rose to fame with his band Taste in the 1960s and died in 1995 aged 47. His iconic guitar returns to the artist’s birthplace, 30 years after his death.

“I am very pleased that Rory’s guitar is coming back to Ireland,” said Ireland’s Minister for Culture, Catherine Martin.

“Since the sale of Rory Gallagher’s collection was announced, I have shared the excitement of the country, and music fans in particular, that his iconic guitar would be secured as an addition to our national heritage collection and a testament to his many achievements,” he stressed. .

“Rory achieved worldwide success with his original blues-based style and was loved by fans for his many albums and legendary live performances,” he added.
