The news of the death of the 90-year-old mother and her 55-year-old son, after a fire broke out in the two-story house on Halepas street in Mastaba, where they lived, has caused shock in the society of Heraklion, but also questions after the first findings of the authorities and the revelations about the second son of the family and about the development of the incident.
According to information from ERT Heraklion and local media, both the elderly woman and her son – who were found charred – were bedridden, while the other son, around 60 years old, according to the prosecuting authorities, had taken care of them for the last 13 years. There is also a girl in the family, who was at work at the time of the incident.
What did the firefighters find?
12 firefighters with 4 vehicles immediately rushed to the scene, who, entering the apartment on the first floor to attempt to extinguish the fire, saw in a hospital bed the charred body of the man (who, according to information from cretalive.gr, had suffered a stroke and was experiencing mobility problems) with a nylon bag on the head and a few meters further, on the floor, the corpse of the old woman.
The second son, who had gone out on the balcony, was freed by the firefighters who brought him down safely to the street.
Double tragedy
And while the extinguishing operation was in progress and while there was great disturbance in the neighborhood, as neighbors and relatives had begun to gather, the second son of the family, disappeared from the scene in an unknown direction.
As it was revealed later and according to the data so far, the man went to the neighboring apartment building (where he reportedly keeps an apartment), climbed onto the roof and fell into the void from the back side.
ELAS is taking over the case
At the scene of the tragedy, police officers from the Immediate Actions, the Security and the Signage rushed at the same time. The Police forces were immediately mobilized to locate the assault rifle, which was eventually located, in cooperation with the firefighters and neighbors, in an uncovered area of the apartment building.
His body, after first falling into an awning, ended up on a metal surface. The man, seriously injured, was taken by EKAV rescuers, a few minutes later, to PAGNI.
A medical examiner immediately arrived at the scene of the tragedy to examine the charred piles, while the causes of the fire are being investigated by the Fire Department’s investigative unit. According to information, the first findings are such that the case is now being taken over by the Greek Police, with all possibilities remaining open.
