The singer Shawn Mendes opened up about his sexuality during a concert in Colorado on Monday, saying that “just trying to figure it out like everyone else does».

“Sometimes I’m sure and sometimes I’m not. It is very scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about the issue“, he told the concertgoers.

According to fan footage of the concert posted on social media, Mendes made the above comments before performing a unreleased song which seems to be inspired by how the rumors about his sexuality made him feel.

The Canadian singer has previously criticized such rumors, citing their intrusiveness.

Speaking during the performance Morrison’s Red Rocks AmphitheatreMendes said that “he thought about it for a minute today if he was going to say something after all».

To cheers from the crowd, he continued: “The truth is that I didn’t manage to do many things at 15 and discover parts of myself».

And he continued:There’s this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long“, adding that it is “kind of silly, because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing and it’s so hard to put into boxes.”

“It always felt like a violation of a piece that is very personal to me. It’s something I’ve been trying to figure out for myself, something I haven’t discovered yet and something I’m still trying to discover».

“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just trying to find it like everyone else».

He then talked about his unreleased song The Mountainwhich includes the lyrics: “You can say I’m too young, you can say I’m too old, you can say I like girls or boys, whatever suits you».

Mendes told the crowd that it was important to write this new song because it “felt like a moment that he could address in a way that felt close to his heart.”

“And I guess now I’m speaking freely, because I just want to be closer to everybody and kind of be in my truth,” she added.

In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, Mendes talked about being closeted “in the last five years about being gay.”

The following year, he told the Guardian that the rumors were hurtful. “I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine people who don’t have the support system I do and how that might affect them».

Mendes has had a number of chart-topping hits in the UK, US and Canada, including the single Señoritawhich was released with Camilla Cabello, whom he also previously dated.
