REM have shared a new lyric video for their 1986 hit “I Believe” as part of the ‘We Are Hope With The Times’ campaign to encourage them citizens in the US to vote in the presidential election.

Ahead of the election next week the band stressed the importance of voting. Last month REM released “We Are Hope With The Times,” a digital collection of songs in celebration of National Voter Registration Day.

Since then bandleader Michael Stipe has publicly endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on numerous occasions. He recently appeared at a campaign concert for Harris and spoke to Doug Emhoff – Harris’ husband – about his support for the Democratic candidate along with Jason Isbell.

Now, REM have shared a new video for ‘I Believe’, a song from their 1986 album ‘Life’s Great Pageant’, to further convince people to go to the polls next week.

In a statement on social media, Stipe said: “I believe the choices in this election could not be stronger or more important. Vote and encourage everyone you know to do the same—that’s how we win in 2024 and I think we can do it!!!’

The video was created by the band’s longtime artistic director Chris Bilheimer and draws inspiration from designs Stipe created during REM’s “Fables of the Reconstruction” tour, as well as the politically charged T-shirts he wore to the ceremony of the 1991 MTV VMAs.

When awarded Best Video for ‘Losing My Religion’, the band used their acceptance speech to focus attention on causes such as gun control, reproductive rights, voting rights and alternative energy sources.

The American rock band always points out the importance of participating in elections. In 2016, Stipe and Mike Mills spoke about their fear of a Donald Trump presidency during a Q&S session at the London Borderline and added that they hoped his election would “mobilize” disenchanted American voters.
