Director Ryan Coogler, 35, known for his work in the films “Black Panther” (2018) and “Creed” (2015), was arrested and handcuffed at a bank in Atlanta, United States, while withdrawing money from his account. The action would have taken place in January, but only came to public knowledge this week.
According to the US website TMZ, local police believed it was an attempted robbery. “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and escalated everything to my satisfaction, and we moved on,” the director told TMZ.
At the time, Coogler wore sunglasses, a face mask to protect against Covid and a black cap. He would have asked the attendant through a note written on paper that he wanted to withdraw US$12,000 (about R$60,100), and that the money be counted discreetly.
Police said a warning is issued whenever an amount over $10,000 is attempted to be withdrawn. In addition to Coogler, two people who were waiting for him in a car were also handcuffed and taken to a police car. The time of Coogler’s arrest was recorded by police cameras, which indicate the date of January 7, 2022.
During the cops’ action, Coogler cooperated and tried to communicate that they were catching an innocent person, suggesting that the cops Google his name. According to authorities, he was released after presenting his driver’s license and a bank card.
“We are deeply sorry that this happened. This should never have happened and we apologize to Mr Coogler,” Bank of America said in a statement.
