Notis Mitarakis, Minister of Immigration and Asylum, spoke about the imprint that the war in Ukraine has in Greece on SKAI TV and the show “Unmatched”.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, 7,000 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in our country. They receive almost automatically a 12-month residence permit while their entry is made without a visa, only with their Ukrainian passports. About 50 people who are in Sintiki, Serres and in some apartments have requested hospitality.
The minister explained that most of them live with their compatriots and as long as the situation in Ukraine clarifies it remains to be seen whether the refugees who arrived in Greece will return to Ukraine or the men of the families will choose to come to Europe.
Greece will receive refugees from Poland
Mr Mitarakis stressed that Greece would send planes or buses to pick up refugees from Poland following a request for help from Warsaw, as there are more than 1.2 million people in the country. Relocations from Poland will be voluntary and not mandatory.
Of the 60,000 seats that the National Reception System of Greece has in total, half are used and therefore 30,000 are available. In case the flows from Ukraine are increased, our country will request extraordinary funding from the EU.
