To honor the memory of the journalist and writer Dimitris Triantafyllidis, who passed away a few days ago, skai.gr collected and presents four radio broadcasts in which the well-known historian talks about the “World of the Russians”.

The narrative focuses on the pivotal role of the Mongol invasion and the influence of the Golden Horde, which left an indelible mark on Russian identity and society. Mongol rule, with its strategy of tax servitude, shaped the political and social structure of the region for over three centuries, influencing thought and collective consciousness.

The war, the constant threat and dependence on a foreign conqueror intensified Russian suspicion towards the West and competitiveness towards the East. In addition, the country’s physical isolation due to geography and climate, and the ceaseless quest for access to warm seas, were important factors in Russia’s foreign policy, a goal that was maintained well into the 20th century.
