Say goodbye to dryness with these easy tips
We all know that annoying feeling dryness on the face, the tightness we feel, the dry spots or the ‘rubbing’ of the make-up because the texture of epidermis it is lost to us. Dryness on the face is annoying, but at the same time it is also a sign that our skin immediately needs a little extra care.
As David Kim, MD, a dermatologist at Idriss Dermatology in New York City, explains, dryness occurs when our skin’s barrier weakens, leaving the skin dull and irritated. The clinical name is xerosis and is caused by a lack of moisture or oil in the skin.
Dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, points out that dryness can be caused by a number of factors, including exposure to cold and dry air, daily habits that include harsh skin care products, medical conditions, and of course, the aging process.
1. Wash your face with lukewarm, not hot, water
One of the golden rules of beauty is to never wash your face, hair or body with hot water, no matter how relaxing it is. Hot showers can cause inflammation and damage the skin barrier, exacerbating dryness. Prefer lukewarm water and a gentle cleansing foam, specially designed for dry skin.
2. Apply moisturizer to slightly fresh skin
Henry suggests applying the moisturizer when your skin is still a little fresh, to lock in the moisture in the skin.

3. Look for products with moisturizing ingredients
The simplest step is to choose products with moisturizing and nourishing ingredients. Moisturizing products typically fall into three main categories: moisturizers, oils, and sealers. Humectants, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, attract water to the skin, while sealers, such as beeswax and petroleum jelly, prevent moisture loss. Look for products that help restore the skin barrier, soothe irritations and are suitable for sensitive skin.
4. Exfoliate with a moisturizer
Exfoliating can help even dry skin if done right. Opt for mild chemical exfoliators, such as lactic acid, which also acts as a moisturizer. Avoid natural exfoliants with granules as well as products with salicylic or glycolic acid, which can irritate your skin.
5. Avoid alcohol, perfumes and other irritants
When the skin is dry, its barrier is disrupted, making it more susceptible to environmental irritations. Avoid products with alcohol, perfume, acetone, and essential oils that can cause reactions. Prefer products without parabens and sulfates.
6. Don’t wash your face excessively
While the choice of cleanser is important, washing too often can strip the skin of its natural oils. Use a gentle oil-based cleanser or balm that won’t dehydrate your skin.
7. Professional treatments
If you are looking for more enhanced solutions, there are treatments in dermatology centers, such as “skin boosters” based on hyaluronic acid, which enhance hydration and offer a fresh look to the skin, without increasing the volume. However, it’s the daily home care habits that make the biggest difference.
With these simple habits, dryness doesn’t have to be a permanent enemy for your skin anymore!
