Could the character Mônica, created by Mauricio de Sousa, be the daughter of President Lula (PT)? The curious relationship between the protagonist of Turma da Mônica and the Brazilian president was made by a meme profile on Instagram that published a comic in which the protagonist says “Today is daddy’s birthday” in front of a calendar page showing the 27th of October, the politician’s birthday.
In fact, Mônica’s father in the comic book was born on October 27th, but, of course, he is not Lula. In the comic book, he is called Seu Sousa and his birthday, “is a tribute to the birthday of the creator of the stories, Mauricio de Sousa, who was born on October 27, 1935”, as stated by Mauricio de Sousa Produções.

Interestingly, Mauricio is ten years older than Lula and appears in the comic as the father of another character, Marina, created in 1995.
The post went viral with a comic about Mônica’s father’s birthday, which was published in the 94th edition, in October 1994. Most internet users understood the relationship between Mr. Sousa and Lula to be a joke, but there were those who thought the post was serious.
Mauricio has already stated, in an interview with Folha, that politics is not included in comics. “My characters are children, and children don’t get involved in politics,” he said.
