In 1997, Diddy used a snippet of the song for his own hit ‘I’ll Be Missing You’
The Sting revealed his thoughts on his legacy “Every Breath You Take” of the Police after the numerous accusations against him Sean “Diddy” Combs.
In 1983 the band Police with lead singer and bassist Sting released the top hit ‘Every Breath You Take’. In 1997, Diddy used a snippet of the song for his own hit “I’ll Be Missing You”. Now that Diddy is facing extortion and human trafficking charges for sexual exploitation, rape and sexual assault, Sting has offered his thoughts on the jailed hip-hop mogul, music producer and rapper’s song.
In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sting responded when asked if he thought the Police’s success had been “tainted” by Diddy’s cover: “No. I mean, I don’t know what happened to Diddy. But it doesn’t tarnish the song at all. It’s still my song.”
Last year, Diddy said he was forced to pay Sting $5,000 every day for the rest of his life to use the clip. However, he quickly retracted the comment, saying he was “joking”. “Me and @OfficialSting have been friends for a long time! He never charged me $3,000 or $5,000 a day for “Missing You.” He’s probably making more than $5,000 a day from one of the biggest songs in history.” he said in his post.
Sean John Combs, known by his stage names Diddy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puff, Puffy, Love, Brother Love, who built the careers of artists such as Notorious BIG, Mary J. Blige and Usher, was first arrested in September and was charged with human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation and trafficking for prostitution. His request for $50 million bail was denied and he has reportedly been placed under close observation to prevent suicide as he awaits trial. The artist has since appealed against the bail rejection. His trial is scheduled for May 5, 2025.
