Ben Affleck says he’s afraid of being canceled at any moment: ‘Business insecurities’

The uncertainties of the Hollywood artistic industry affect the spirits of actors, even those who are already experienced. Ben Affleck said he feared he was always one step away from a possible cancellation due to something he said was wrong.

The actor founded, together with Matt Damon, the production company Artists Equity, which aims to change the method of payment and shareholding of people involved in a production, as a way of having more certainty in the future. It is headquartered in Los Angeles and has 70 employees, with Affleck as CEO.

“We are all subject to insecurities in this business. Whether we are actors, directors or writers, the phone may stop ringing for us. I’m one bad movie away from never working again, and I have a family to support”, he reflected in an interview with the American newspaper Deadline .

In the duo’s company, the actors become financial investors in the project. Film profits are shared more fairly after release.

“One of the problems with the way business has evolved in Hollywood is that I think, intentionally or not, people have been taught that participating in projects is not valid. Costs will accumulate and then fees will be taken out of the final payment. .”

The actor gave the example of the film “Contato de Risco” (2003), in which he received a high payment, even though the production failed at the box office, and the final result of a work can be discouraging.

“Looking back, this doesn’t seem right as the studio lost money. It wasn’t the film that lost the most money in history, although it was perhaps the most famous failure. Still, it doesn’t feel right to me,” he said. “Our production company generates significant external investment to create what we hope will be a sort of mini independent studio in which we can create cash flow. With that, we can say ‘ok, if you’re going to buy a movie from us, this is what it’s going to cost you.”
