Behind her glamorous image Sofia Vergara hides a life full of tragedies, from addictions and murders in her family to her personal battle against thyroid cancer.
The daughter of a farmer and a housewife, Vergara grew up in a family with five siblings in the Colombian city of Barranquilla. At 17, she was discovered by a photographer on the beach in her hometown, who arranged for her to star in a commercial for a well-known soft drink. The spot was a huge hit across Latin America.
She started modeling while continuing her studies in Dentistry at Columbia University. In the meantime, she married her childhood sweetheart, Jose Gonzalez, with whom, at the age of 19, she became the mother of her son, Manolo. After her split from Gonzalez, she moved to Miami with her child.
In 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, only 28 years old. “I had never taken drugs, nor smoked. I didn’t even eat red meat. I was feeling perfectly healthy and suddenly I was told I had cancer. I was terrified. I immediately thought of my child”, she had said in an interview. The surgery and radiation saved her life.
