Elle Macpherson detailed her alcohol addiction and “journey” to sobriety in her memoir, “elle: Life, Lessons & Learning to Trust Yourself.”
Reflecting on her recovery, the 60-year-old supermodel – known as ‘The Body’ – revealed she often got drunk and drank shots of vodka after putting her sons to bed. “My life seemed amazing to everyone. On the outside I was doing a great job, but deep down I was really struggling.”she wrote in her book.
Even after the birth of her youngest child, the “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit” cover girl recalled feeling overcome by the urge to drink a bottle of champagne they’d given her. Despite being warned by her two physiotherapists that drinking heavily after giving birth would cause hormone problems, Elle Macpherson that all she could think about was alcohol.
In order to juggle motherhood and her career, she turned to vodka to unwind in the evenings as she desperately tried to maintain her perfect public image. At the time she was in a relationship with Frenchman Arpad ‘Arki’ Busson, who was often away during the week on business. At the time Flynn, her son, was very ill and in and out of the hospital. Despite considering going to rehab, she told Arki that she was fine.

Even after battling pneumonia after the birth of Cy, she quickly returned to work in a bid to prove to her partner and herself that motherhood hadn’t affected her. “I really enjoyed spending time with Arki and wanted to prove to him that I would be with him in both fun and business, while also being the mother of his sons,” she wrote. “I’d go out and drink and have fun and get sick again”she notes.
Macpherson also wrote that she experienced terrifying fainting spells. “I would talk to someone and then forget what I was saying. They looked at me strangely as if they were waiting for me to continue”he wrote. Despite this, she continued to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism for her anxiety. “I often drank after putting my children to bed. I would sit alone and drink vodka and then write to-do lists and letters to my family. I did the housework, listened to music until about 11 at night, then went to bed and passed out.”
And he continued: “I would get up in the morning, exercise and have a coffee for breakfast. I threw up and made sure to throw up three times before I went to sleep. It was always three times.”

Despite struggling with her mental health and addiction, Macpherson recalled people telling her she was so organized. “I was really proud of that. I guess I had to be organized because I drank and I never wanted anyone to know.”the mother of two wrote.
Those closest to Macpherson, however, began to suspect something was wrong. Her physical therapists were among the first to suggest detox. Before agreeing, she insisted on spending the summer in Ibiza with her family, against the advice of her psychologist. Although he managed not to drink for the first few weeks, things took a turn for the worse when he was unable to accompany his partner and their friends on a night out at a trendy club. After putting her children to bed, she decided to open a bottle of vodka.
Once she entered rehab at a facility in Arizona, Macpherson recalled feeling humiliated and angry that she had been placed with people struggling with anorexia. While in rehab, she used the name “Mac” to keep a low profile and was worried about being recognized. Last year, he celebrated 20 years of sobriety.
