Pope Francis welcomes trans actress from ‘Baby Reindeer’

Mexican actress Nava Mau, who became known for her role as Teri in “Baby Reindeer” (Netflix) met with Pope Francis at the Vatican last Wednesday (20).

The meeting was recorded by the actress on her social networks. In addition to her, the pope received six LGBTQIA+ activists from different countries.

“This year has been full of moments that didn’t feel real and still don’t feel real. Never in my life did I imagine I would be sitting next to the Pope in his residence, let alone talking to him for an hour alongside six LGBTQIA+ activists from around the world. world,” wrote the actress.

Nava Mau, 32, was nominated for an Emmy for best supporting actress in a miniseries or film for “Baby Rena.” The series won four statuettes.

Still in the publication, she told her fans what the content of the conversation with Francisco was. “I told him about my work with survivors of violence and how community has been my faith,” he wrote.

“I also talked about what ‘Baby Reindeer’ meant to millions of people around the world by showing an empowered, self-possessed and loved trans woman.”

In the series, Nava Mau plays Teri, girlfriend of protagonist Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd), a man who lives in conflict with his own sexuality. Their secret romance is threatened when Donny is pursued by the stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning).

At the end of the meeting with the pope, the actress and the group received the blessing. “His final words to us were wishes of love and happiness and that we always continue fighting. I will never forget his blessing,” he wrote.

Nava also spoke about his fellow activists in Uganda and Ghana, countries that punish LGBTQIA+ people with harsh laws. “As we see an increase in attacks against trans and queer people in the US, I am struck by their unwavering courage. Their determination should guide us all. We are not free until everyone is free,” she concluded.
