Lyle Mendendez’s wife announces end of marriage after 21 years

Lyle, one of the Menendez brothers, who are serving life sentences for murdering their parents in 1989, is no longer married. Rebecca Reed, his ex-wife, announced their separation on social media, after 21 years of marriage. This Monday (25), the brothers will participate in a virtual hearing for release.

Reed announced the divorce on Facebook and said she remains friendly with her ex-husband: “This is not a cheating scandal. Lyle and I have been separated for a while, but we remain best friends and family. I continue to manage his Facebook pages , with his contribution”.

She also defended her ex-husband’s freedom and said she was committed to the process: “I am eternally committed to the enduring fight for Lyle and Erik’s freedom, as has been so evident over the years.”

Lyle and Rebecca were married in 2003 at Mule Creek Prison near Sacramento, California. The two met 10 years earlier, in 1993, the year the brothers were convicted. In 2017, she told People magazine that she spoke to her husband daily and met him weekly in prison.

“Our interaction is very distraction-free, and we probably have more intimate conversations than most married people who are distracted by life events. We try to talk on the phone every day, sometimes several times a day. I have a very stable and engaging marriage, and that helps me, it brings a lot of peace and joy. It’s a counterpoint to the predictable and very stressful environment,” he said.

Lyle and Erik Menendez are serving life sentences for the murder of their parents in their luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills, California, in the United States, in 1989. They were convicted in 1993, after two trials widely covered by the media that gave them great notoriety. The case became widely discussed again after the premiere of the series “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez” (Netflix).
