Regina Gonçalves case: Justice orders the State to take care of the socialite’s assets

Socialite Regina Gonçalves, 88, suffered a defeat in court in the case involving her battle with her former driver José Marcos Chaves Ribeiro, accused of attempted feminicide against her.

The Court ruled on Wednesday (4) that the State is responsible for the elderly woman’s guardianship and reinforced Ribeiro’s then argument that her own family would be incapable of taking care of the socialite’s assets.

As soon as she received the news, Regina called the police and the Maria da Penha patrol, who immediately went to Chopin, the traditional Rio building where she lives. After the visit, a report was issued informing the authorities that the curator’s office (José Marcos Ribeiro) had gone to the location to threaten the elderly woman and her family. Benedito Júlio Lemos, Regina’s brother, was hospitalized after the incident.

At the end of November, the Civil Police and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro carried out Operation Lady of Diamonds to try to arrest Ribeiro. However, he was not found and is considered a fugitive. The former driver is also responsible for the crimes of false imprisonment, psychological violence and theft against Regina Gonçalves.

He is still being investigated for his alleged participation in the death of Therezinha Lemos Yamada, sister of socialite Regina Gonçalves, which occurred in 2016.

The former driver once again came into the police’s sights after the discovery of cards in the name of Regina’s sister — and their respective passwords — in a safe belonging to the Rio socialite’s former employee. A Beretta pistol, with a mother-of-pearl grip, was also found.

Wanted by F5Ribeiro’s defense announced that it is no longer representing the case.
