Police in Poland have arrested a Russian national wanted in connection with fraud and money laundering during the time he ran a major cryptocurrency exchange, it said in a statement today.

The man, identified only as Dmitry V. under Polish personal data law, was arrested based on an extradition request from the United States, the police statement said.

“Dmitri V. is suspected of multiple counts of fraud, money transfer and money laundering in connection with the operation of one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges,” police said in a statement.

“For the crimes for which the arrested person is suspected, he may face up to 20 years in prison.”

The Polish daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita writes that Dmitry V. he ran WEX, which was one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in Russia until its bankruptcy in 2018.

“The man is in custody pending the completion of all proceedings in relation to his extradition to the US,” a police spokesman said.
